IELTS Listening: How to Avoid Losing Easy Marks
Many IELTS Listening mistakes are not caused by poor English. They happen because candidates miss instructions, spelling, plurals, or distractors.
1. Read the instructions carefully
If the question says “NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS,” do not write three words. Even if your answer is meaningful, it will be marked wrong.
2. Predict the answer type
Before the audio starts, look at the gap and predict what kind of word is needed.
Examples:
- A number
- A date
- A place
- A person’s name
- A noun
- An adjective
This helps you listen with purpose.
3. Watch out for distractors
IELTS speakers often correct themselves.
Example:
“I thought the meeting was on Tuesday, but it has actually been moved to Thursday.”
The answer is Thursday, not Tuesday.
4. Check spelling and plurals
Small errors can cost marks.
Examples:
- “doctor” vs “doctors”
- “address” vs “adress”
- “library” vs “libary”
5. Do not panic if you miss one answer
If you miss an answer, move on immediately. Staying stuck on one question can make you miss the next three.
Final tip
After practice tests, review why each wrong answer happened. Was it spelling, speed, vocabulary, or a distractor? That tells you what to fix next.
