IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic: How to Describe Charts Clearly

IELTS Writing Task 1 Academic: How to Describe Charts Clearly

IELTS Academic Writing Task 1 requires you to describe visual information clearly. You do not need personal opinions. You need accurate reporting.

1. Start with a paraphrase

Do not copy the question exactly. Rewrite it in your own words.

Example:

Question: “The chart shows the percentage of people using public transport.”

Paraphrase: “The chart compares the proportion of people who used public transport over a given period.”

2. Write a strong overview

The overview is very important. It should describe the main trends, highest points, lowest points, or major differences.

Useful phrases:

  • “Overall, it is clear that...”
  • “The most noticeable trend is...”
  • “In general, X increased while Y declined.”

3. Group information logically

Do not describe every number separately. Group similar trends together.

For example:

  • Increasing categories together
  • Decreasing categories together
  • Highest and lowest figures together

4. Use accurate language

For upward trends:

  • increased
  • rose
  • climbed
  • grew

For downward trends:

  • decreased
  • fell
  • declined
  • dropped

For no major change:

  • remained stable
  • stayed almost the same
  • showed little change

5. Avoid giving reasons

Task 1 is descriptive. Do not explain why the data changed unless the chart provides that information.

Final tip

Always include an overview. A missing overview can seriously limit your Task Achievement score.
