IELTS Speaking Part 2: How to Structure a Strong Cue Card Answer
IELTS Speaking Part 2 can feel stressful because you must speak for up to two minutes on one topic. The key is not memorization. The key is structure.
Use the 4-step method
When you receive your cue card, organize your answer like this:
- Introduction
- Main details
- Personal experience
- Reflection or opinion
This gives your answer a natural flow.
Example structure
If the topic is “Describe a person who helped you,” you could say:
- Who the person is
- When they helped you
- What they did
- Why it was important
- How you felt afterward
Extend your answer naturally
Do not give short answers. Add reasons, examples, comparisons, and feelings.
Short answer:
“My teacher helped me with English.”
Better answer:
“My English teacher helped me when I was preparing for my exam. She corrected my writing every week and explained why my sentences were unclear. This made me more confident because I could see my progress.”
Useful phrases
- “One person who comes to mind is...”
- “What made this experience memorable was...”
- “At that time, I felt...”
- “Looking back, I think...”
Final tip
Practice speaking for two minutes with a timer. Record yourself and check whether your answer has a beginning, middle, and ending.
