IELTS Writing Task 2: How to Move from Band 6.5 to Band 7+

IELTS Writing Task 2: How to Move from Band 6.5 to Band 7+

Many IELTS candidates stay at Band 6.5 because their essays are clear but not fully developed. To reach Band 7 or higher, you need stronger paragraph control, clearer argument development, and more accurate language.

1. Answer every part of the question

Before writing, underline the task words. If the question asks for advantages and disadvantages, discuss both. If it asks whether you agree or disagree, make your position clear throughout the essay.

2. Use one main idea per body paragraph

A strong IELTS paragraph usually has:

  • A clear topic sentence
  • An explanation
  • A specific example
  • A link back to the question

Avoid adding too many ideas in one paragraph. Depth is better than quantity.

3. Improve your examples

Weak example:

“Technology is useful for students.”

Stronger example:

“For example, medical students can watch recorded lectures and review difficult topics such as anatomy several times before an exam.”

4. Control your grammar

Band 7 writing does not need complicated grammar in every sentence. It needs mostly accurate grammar with some variety. Mix simple, compound, and complex sentences.

5. Practice with feedback

Writing more essays is useful, but repeating the same mistakes will not improve your band. Use feedback to identify repeated issues such as unclear topic sentences, weak examples, or grammar errors.

Final tip

Before submitting your essay, spend two minutes checking your position, paragraphing, and repeated grammar mistakes. Small corrections can make a real difference.
