OET Listening: Common Mistakes Healthcare Professionals Make

OET Listening: Common Mistakes Healthcare Professionals Make

OET Listening uses healthcare situations, but even experienced healthcare professionals can lose marks. The challenge is not only medical knowledge. It is listening accurately under exam conditions.

Mistake 1: Writing too much

Some candidates write long answers when only a short answer is needed. Always follow the word limit.

Mistake 2: Missing corrections

Speakers may correct themselves.

Example:

“The appointment was planned for Monday, sorry, I mean Wednesday.”

The correct answer is Wednesday.

Mistake 3: Ignoring spelling

Medical vocabulary must be spelled correctly. Practice common terms such as:

  • diabetes
  • hypertension
  • infection
  • medication
  • physiotherapy

Mistake 4: Losing focus after one missed answer

If you miss one answer, do not panic. Continue listening for the next one. The audio will not wait.

Mistake 5: Depending only on medical knowledge

Do not answer based on what you think is medically likely. Answer only from what you hear.

Final tip

After each practice test, review the transcript. Identify whether your mistake was caused by speed, vocabulary, spelling, or distraction.
