OET Reading Part A: How to Find Answers Faster
OET Reading Part A is fast-paced. You have limited time to answer questions using several short healthcare texts. The main skill is locating information quickly.
Know the text types
Part A often includes texts such as:
- Patient notes
- Guidelines
- Medication information
- Hospital policies
- Research summaries
Before answering, quickly identify what each text is about.
Read the questions first
The questions tell you what information to search for. Underline keywords such as:
- Symptoms
- Dates
- Drug names
- Conditions
- Numbers
Scan, do not read everything
You do not need to read every sentence in detail. Move your eyes quickly over the text to find matching information.
Watch for paraphrasing
The answer may not use the same words as the question.
Examples:
- “high temperature” may appear as “fever”
- “medicine” may appear as “medication”
- “doctor” may appear as “clinician”
Manage your time
If you cannot find an answer quickly, move to the next question and return later. Spending too long on one item can reduce your total score.
Final tip
Practice Part A with a strict timer. Speed improves when you learn to search for information instead of reading every word.
