OET Speaking Role Play: How to Sound More Natural and Professional
OET Speaking tests your ability to communicate clearly with patients, carers, or relatives. You do not need perfect English, but you do need professional communication.
Start with a warm opening
A good opening helps the patient feel comfortable.
Example:
“Good morning, my name is Nurse Patel. I understand you wanted to discuss your medication today. How are you feeling?”
Show empathy
Empathy is important in OET Speaking. Use phrases such as:
- “I can understand why you feel worried.”
- “That must be uncomfortable for you.”
- “I appreciate your concern.”
Avoid medical jargon
Patients may not understand technical terms. Explain medical information in simple language.
Instead of:
“You may have hypertension.”
Say:
“Your blood pressure is higher than normal.”
Use signposting
Signposting helps the patient follow your explanation.
Examples:
- “First, I’ll explain the possible cause.”
- “Then we can discuss what you can do at home.”
- “Finally, I’ll answer any questions you have.”
Check understanding
Do not just give information. Confirm that the patient understands.
Useful phrases:
- “Does that make sense?”
- “Would you like me to explain that again?”
- “Can I check what you understood from this?”
Final tip
Practice role plays aloud. Focus on empathy, clarity, and patient-friendly language.
